I chose to build bat houses because it was a way for me to use my creative skills to build something meaningful to not only benefit an endangered species but also to help other students and Girl Scouts learn about the benefits of bats in our surroundings.
Bat houses provide a safe habitat for bats, especially as their natural habitats continue to decline. By installing bat houses in our yards, schools, and communities, we can support these important creatures that play a key role in our local ecosystem.
Bats consume large amounts of night-flying insects, including pests that can be detrimental to gardens, crops, and our communities. By consuming these pests, bats help reduce the need for chemical pesticides, thus providing a safer, less toxic way to deal with area insects.
The earlier bat houses I built as a part of my Silver Award Project served as an excellent tool for the education of local students in my area. They provided a hands-on and interactive way to learn about bats, their life cycles, and their importance in maintaining a balanced ecosystem.
I created this website to help other school kids and Girl Scouts learn about bats and how to construct longer-lasting more sustainable bat houses. In my research, I found that educational programs focused on bats, which include building bat houses, have grown in popularity. These activities can help students learn more about bats and the importance of protecting and preserving our local ecosystem.
